It’s that time of year. When food blogs burst at the seams with recipes using all manner of citrus, especially Meyer lemons. I have my own uses for them (check out this wicked vinaigrette, or this lovely candied peel and simple syrup, perfect for cocktails, or this divine bundt cake, which doesn’t specifically call for Meyer lemons, but would be fabulous with them).
I’m not a fan of buying stuff for the sake of stuff. Gifts, no matter how small, need to have meaning. So when I got word that we were doing an exchange at a party we’re going to ($5 or less), I knew I was going to make something.
We have at last put the bone chilling cold behind us and have tasted summer. That may sound dramatic, but it really was the winter that would.not.end in Southern Ontario (and many other areas, going by the teeth chattering heard around Twitter). There is something about lemons and Easter. I don’t know what it is, but I lost track of the number of lemons I used this past weekend. I made fresh lemonade, a lemon, garlic and oregano rub for a grilled leg of lamb, and I squeezed lemon over roasted golden beets… I was going to make a modified version of this lemon vinaigrette, too, but I thought it might be too much. As it was, this cake, with it’s glaze and sauce, packed a lemony punch all on it’s own. Continue reading
It’s that time of year again. Meyer lemons are everywhere. Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter… Oh, and in grocery stores. Thought to be a cross between a lemon and possibly a Mandarin orange, Meyer lemons are a delight. They are less tart than their pure counterparts, and have a delightful floral quality that brings so much to dishes that they’re used in. Continue reading
Wow, has the heat arrived. And it’s unwelcome cousin, humidity. We had quite a storm the other night, complete with copious amounts of rain, so our gardens are happy. I actually harvested a few radishes already. That made my daughter happy. And we turned on the air conditioning last night. That made us all happy. Continue reading
