I’m not a fan of buying stuff for the sake of stuff. Gifts, no matter how small, need to have meaning. So when I got word that we were doing an exchange at a party we’re going to ($5 or less), I knew I was going to make something.
While Thanksgiving is long past here in Canada already, it is just around the corner in the U.S. With my American readers in mind, and giving a nod to the creeping chill that is wrapping itself around folks in many areas, I’ve put together a compilation of a few recipes featuring seasonal foods that are abundant right now. Enjoy!
If you’ve been around my blog long enough, you’ve no doubt noticed that my posts are quite seasonal (and often begin with a mention of the weather, which got quite cool last week, then warm again, and has evened out now). As a result, there tends to be a theme over the course of any given few weeks. Stone fruits in the summer, greens and such in spring, and right now? Apples.
Part of what lessens the blow of Christmas being a mere week away is knowing that it’s also the season for wonderful treats, like fresh cranberries and clementines. Did anyone else get a clementine in their stocking on Christmas morning? We did. Along with a single walnut. Which never got eaten. Desire to learn
I didn’t grow up cooking. While I have memories of my mother and her mother canning and cooking together, and my paternal grandmother’s kitchen being a constant source of culinary goodness, I have no memory of helping. Or being taught any of the techniques or recipes I witnessed.
I want to say that things have changed for my kids. That they’ve been my kitchen helpers daily since they could hold a wooden spoon. But that’s not true. At all. Having never learned to cook at the side of a patient teacher, it’s been a struggle for me to find the patience to teach my own kids. Continue reading
