Finding inspiration

Recipe Journal ~ myediblejourney.com

I’ve had this journal for probably 20 years. It started as a place to keep recipes that I found interesting. It stored inspiration. Then the internet came along. Now I use it to store recipes that I use often and want to reference quickly, like basic meatballs, my mother’s potato salad, iced coffee ratios, bagels… etc. It’s seen better days, but I do use it often.

Inspiration is a funny thing. It can flow naturally from within, or it can be influenced by things beyond our control. It certainly doesn’t come with a tap, available whenever and wherever.  Continue reading

Where is the journey?

Cheese Shop at St. Lawrence Market in Toronto

I love going to St. Lawrence Market in Toronto. It’s among my favourite places to go.

I started this blog in part because the foodie in me had taken over another one, which became wildly unfocused as a result. I also embarked on becoming a “food blogger” proper because I wanted to share my love of food with others. I chose “journey” as a way of framing the experience, but I think I’ve lost the plot. Disappointments and missing inspiration

Apples | My Edible Journey

Aren’t they pretty? First apples of the late summer season. Ginger Gold or Ginger Crisp, depending on who’s selling  them.

So I haven’t had much to say lately, it seems. It’s not that I haven’t been cooking, or eating, or trying new foods. I certainly have. In fact, I’ve been doing a lot. Continue reading

A Legacy

My Grandmother's Legacy | My Edible JourneyAfter my paternal grandmother died, my father found a couple of notes she’d written.  She wanted to make sure that I (the eldest granddaughter) got a few things, like her china, and a curious little rolling pin.  I was in my early 20’s when she passed, which makes the notes all the more remarkable.  She never mentioned them to anyone, and wrote them when I was barely 6! 2013 – The Food That Was

The year that was - My Edible Journey

Well, that’s it then

My first January through December of blogging My Edible Journey.  There were some definite hits (wow, do you all love ham soup!)  And a few misses (so maybe I’m the only one who thinks that cabbage and kale pair well with honey and Feta).  And in between there have been seasons of incredible local bounty, delightful new tastes and a few surprises, good and… not as good.  There have been photos that I have quite loved, only to be panned by foodie link sites, and at least one I really didn’t like, but put up anyway and then had those same sites love them.  Go figure. Like a TV Clip Show

Sorry, folks. I’m down for the count this week with an ear infection/perforated eardrum.  So, in the spirit of television clip shows, I’ve compiled a few posts from the past year to hold us all over until I’m (hopefully) better next week.  And yes, lesson learned.  Keep a post or two in reserve for times such as this… Continue reading

Leftover Turkey Soup

Leftover Turkey Soup |My Edible JourneyYou may want to grab a cup of coffee and sit a while.  I have lots to say today.  🙂

So Thanksgiving has come and gone in Canada.  What a wonderful weekend.  It was beautiful.  Cool nights, days warm enough for long sleeves and no jackets, autumn colours, lots to do… and food.  Good, good food. Continue reading

Culinary Bucket List

Do you have a “culinary bucket list?”  I kind of do. Things that I either haven’t made, but want to, or haven’t tasted, but either want to or have been told that I should.  I had an experience this weekend that falls into the latter, and has given me a new chapter in my edible journey. Continue reading

Random Musings and Mustard

Martin's Preserves | My Edible JourneyStruggling to post today

It’s not the weather.  It is gorgeous, and has been for some time.  We had a brief blip of stupid hot weather earlier in July, but since then it’s been absolutely amazing.  Open windows, cool breezes, warm sunshine, enough rain….  The perfect summer, in my books (assuming it doesn’t get stupid hot again).

I’m struggling more because I don’t have a tidy, cohesive post with a few relevant pictures and a recipe.  I am reminding myself that I started this blog as a place to talk and share.  The pictures and recipes were just a part of the process; not meant to be all-encompassing.  But in the world of food blogs, it’s the tidy posts that get noticed.  And I struggle with being a tiny, tiny fish in an enormous pond sometimes.
