Busy Times

Various edibles | My Edible Journey

We’ve eaten well. Guacamole, crepes with honey goat cheese & strawberry sauce, Pinterest inspired hashbrowns in the waffle iron and bread experiments.

I haven’t forgotten you. Honest. We’ve been down with the sick. It’s January, after all. But in spite of the symphony of sniffles, coughs and sleepless yawns, we’ve been eating alright. I am tired of take out and junk food and scrambling at the last minute to figure out what to eat, so I have been putting in a real effort to have proper food available for us. My efforts have not been perfect, but we have managed to cut down on eating out and ordering in.

Merry Christmas

Christmas Foliage

It’s Christmas Eve. I have no festive foodie post. I’ve been busy with family and friends, celebrating and preparing. There has been food. Plenty of it. From marinated olives to assorted cookies to hot cocoa and hot toddies. Right now, phase one of the stuffing is cooking before I bake up double chocolate muffins (a Christmas morning must).

I hope that you and yours are having a wonderful time, whatever you celebrate, however you observe the last of December. I’m not promising a post between now and the new year, but I’ll see what I can do.

In the meantime, blessings for a wonderful end to 2014 and an even more amazing 2015!

Mint Cream Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

Chocolate mint sandwich cookies | My Edible JourneyI’ll admit it. I’m starting to get my jingle on. Just a little bit. I’ve been listening to the music, and enjoying the sight of the earliest of Christmas lights against the backdrop of snow that we got walloped with last week. Continue reading

2013 – The Food That Was

The year that was - My Edible Journey

Well, that’s it then

My first January through December of blogging My Edible Journey.  There were some definite hits (wow, do you all love ham soup!)  And a few misses (so maybe I’m the only one who thinks that cabbage and kale pair well with honey and Feta).  And in between there have been seasons of incredible local bounty, delightful new tastes and a few surprises, good and… not as good.  There have been photos that I have quite loved, only to be panned by foodie link sites, and at least one I really didn’t like, but put up anyway and then had those same sites love them.  Go figure. Chewy Nut Free Granola Bars

Chewy Nut Free Granola Bars |My Edible Journey

I’m not the sort of mom who has a variety of neatly cut up, ready to go fruits and veggies in tidily stacked and labelled containers in the fridge.  Ever.  I’m the mom who feeds my kids fruits and veggies at home, but who wants convenience when we’re getting ready to hit the road. Continue reading

Like a TV Clip Show

Sorry, folks. I’m down for the count this week with an ear infection/perforated eardrum.  So, in the spirit of television clip shows, I’ve compiled a few posts from the past year to hold us all over until I’m (hopefully) better next week.  And yes, lesson learned.  Keep a post or two in reserve for times such as this… Continue reading

Culinary Bucket List

Do you have a “culinary bucket list?”  I kind of do. Things that I either haven’t made, but want to, or haven’t tasted, but either want to or have been told that I should.  I had an experience this weekend that falls into the latter, and has given me a new chapter in my edible journey. Continue reading

Double Chocolate Cherry Chip Cookies

Double Chocolate Cherry Chip Cookies |My Edible JourneyA jubilee of cherries

Have I mentioned how much I love cherry season?  Oh yeah, I did, here.  It’s still going strong, and I’ve been indulging as much as I can.  I bought a basket on the weekend from a farm nearer the lake, north of here.  It still amazes me how the micro-climates around the peninsula can produce such variety in the same fruits (not to mention some incredible wines).  These cherries are super dark, and very juicy, but smaller than the ones that we bought west of here.  They are still delicious, though. Today is a bit dreary. Actually, it’s a lot dreary. But it’s the kind of dreary that we need.  The rain is gentle and steady, and is going to be followed by warm sunshine.  Together, they will make magic.  The green of the grass will brighten.  The roots of our recent vegetable transplants will stretch into their new soil home.  The cool-loving lettuce and peas will explode with growth.  It is a good dreary.  A dreary that inspires me to bake. Jazzed Up Honey Ice Cream

Honey Ice Cream via myediblejoureny.comChilly for ice cream

Mothers’ Day weekend was chilly. In fact, it was downright cold on Sunday. Especially after a gorgeous lead-up, with sun and warmth and sun… And blossoms. Lots of blossoms. Every year we head to the lilac garden in Niagara Falls. It’s one of my favourite places to spend time, and it is beautiful for such a short time each year. Thankfully it was nice enough on Saturday to head out and take in the sights and amazing scents that the garden offers. Continue reading
