There’s something about muffins. I’ll go months without making them. Then I’ll rediscover how quick and easy they are and how healthy they can be and I start making them all the time. Continue reading

Maple Fig Squares
These squares excite me.
What? I know, they don’t look exciting. In fact, they look like a paler cousin of the date square. And yeah, they are. But they excite me because they’re full of possibility. From the filling to the crust to the topping, they can be changed up in so many ways to make them completely different.
I was originally going to use a mix of dried figs and apricots in them, until I realized that my daughter had eaten the apricots. But already I’m wondering about other fruits. Like dried cherries! Oh.my.gosh. Can you imagine? If you love cherries like I do, you’ll understand my excitement. Continue reading
One of Those Days

The kids and I are having popcorn for lunch today. We’re low on fresh veggies, which they usually have. Oh how I long for the days when our garden and locally grown farmers market produce feed us again. We’ve been in the depths of winter for longer than any winter I can remember in recent history. Another squall line just went through. This may be the coldest February on record in a long time. Usually by now there has been at least a slight sneak peek at spring. Not this year, where we have rejoiced at (very few) 2 and 3 degree Celsius days. Continue reading
Healthy Cocoa Oatmeal Cookies
I hesitate to put the label “healthy” on something like cookies
I mean, they still have sugar and fat and wheat flour in them. But compared to conventional cookies, these are a good bit healthier. They’re also still clearly a treat, and not a meal replacement or anything. Continue reading
Maple Meyer Lemon Vinaigrette
Meyer Lemon Season
It’s that time of year again. Meyer lemons are everywhere. Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter… Oh, and in grocery stores. Thought to be a cross between a lemon and possibly a Mandarin orange, Meyer lemons are a delight. They are less tart than their pure counterparts, and have a delightful floral quality that brings so much to dishes that they’re used in. Continue reading
Chewy Nut Free Granola Bars
I’m not the sort of mom who has a variety of neatly cut up, ready to go fruits and veggies in tidily stacked and labelled containers in the fridge. Ever. I’m the mom who feeds my kids fruits and veggies at home, but who wants convenience when we’re getting ready to hit the road. Continue reading
Black Lentil Salad
Salad days are here
It’s officially summer. To celebrate, it’s become muggy and unsettled, with the threat of storms all week. Hubby and I rang in the solstice at a Pink Floyd (cover band) concert in an open air amphitheatre, under the (bright side of) the moon. Continue reading
Roasted Beet Salad
Happy New Year!
I’d tell you about the wild party, with amazing cocktails and incredible food, but… I’ll be honest. After the kids were in bed, my husband and I enjoyed an assortment of store bought appetizers. He had a beer, I had a local rose wine and topped it off with Christmas chocolate. Then we went to bed. We did see 2013 come in, but without any sparkly ball drop or television commentary of any kind. This is typically how we ring in the new year. And it’s exactly what we wanted to do. Continue reading
