Special Banana Bread

The art of food?

My daughter, who is 5 years old, knows what she likes (what 5 year old doesn’t?).  And when she sees art that speaks to her, she lets us know.  At 3, she was drawn to a piece by a talented young photographer in our church. A luscious composition of raspberries and chocolate cake on a vibrant blueish background. We bought it for her and it will eventually hang in her room alongside her latest acquisition.  Another blue background, this time a painting done by our Pastor’s wife, which I couldn’t resist playing with as a the backdrop for this photo…

Weekend Eats

Weekend Weather and Food

It’s been a “mild” weekend.  By mild, I mean hovering around the freezing mark.  Hey, it’s late February in southern Ontario.  It’s been a darn sight colder of late.  Zero, or even a degree or two warmer, has been most welcome.  We went tobogganing last weekend, given all of the snow we still had from a recent storm.  This weekend has been damp, even wet, and we’ve enjoyed lots of family time, and good food.

Blessing with Bread Salt and Wine

Start with an amazing setting

Our pastor and his wife are also dear friends of ours.  They have been realizing a dream to own a hobby farm on a sprawling piece of heaven on earth for a few years now.  The tiny house, which they have just renovated and expanded, was dwarfed by the magnificence of it all.  In fact, my blog banner picture was taken as we dined al fresco in their yard.  Here’s the original (grace please, it’s an iPod pic).

Asian Pulled Pork Tacos

“Food Truck” Gourmet

Kimchi for Asian pulled pork tacos

Kimchi

Those of you who have followed me here from my previous blog, or Twitter, are familiar with my ladies “gourmet” nights.  For years now I have gotten together every month or two with a group of friends to share great food.  The way it works is thus: The hostess sets the menu, with or without a theme, and hands out the recipes to the group.  Each participant is responsible for making and bringing her assigned dish as written.  These are usually not recipes the hostess has tried before, and they give us all the opportunity to try new foods.  We’ve enjoyed salt cod fritters, lemon feather tall cake, caviar, northern African, south American, all manner of Asian, Greek, Italian, seasonal, local, healthy, fried, festive and exotic foods.

Kaleapalooza

KaleI have discovered a new passion

It’s no secret that I love social media.  I believe it can be, and have seen it be, a force for positive change.  It brings people together in a way previously unknown to the world.  My passion for local food has been nurtured and encouraged by it to the point where I can officially say that social media is a now a passion of mine unto itself.  I’m sure it’s been there a while, but I have only just recently come to recognize it.

Double Chocolate Muffins

I never used to like baking.  I always preferred to be able to tweak and play right up to the very end of a dish.  I would make a batch of cookies here or there, or maybe a loaf of banana bread, but I just didn’t bake much when I was first married.  Much to my husband’s chagrin.

I don’t know what changed.  Or exactly when.  But somewhere along the way I began to enjoy baking.  Cookies, bread, loaves, muffins…

Pretzel Buns

Food heritage

My husband is German.  His father moved to Canada as a young boy, having lost his own father to the war and his home and all he knew to the aftermath.  Before meeting my husband, I’d never heard of nor seen pretzel buns, aka Bretzels, aka Laugenbrötchen (I looked that up – even my husband doesn’t know that word).

Roasted Beet Salad

Happy New Year!

I’d tell you about the wild party, with amazing cocktails and incredible food, but… I’ll be honest.  After the kids were in bed, my husband and I enjoyed an assortment of store bought appetizers.  He had a beer, I had a local rose wine and topped it off with Christmas chocolate.  Then we went to bed.  We did see 2013 come in, but without any sparkly ball drop or television commentary of any kind.  This is typically how we ring in the new year.  And it’s exactly what we wanted to do.Roasted Beet Salad Continue reading

Pictures and peace

There is no recipe today.  Instead I’m taking time to breathe, and just hang out with you.

This year I chose to participate in a December photo a day challenge.  Each day there is a different theme to help capture the season.  I’ve never done anything like this before, and I must say, it’s helped me focus.  This month has not sped by as quickly as the rest of the months this year seemed to.  Taking even a moment each day to deliberately contemplate a specific theme of the season and capture it somehow has helped me to slow down, to not rush too far ahead.  To breathe.   Continue reading

Salted Caramel Sandwich Cookies

Are you tired of salted caramel yet?  Me either.  Bacon everything I think I’m done with (though bacon caramel corn is always awesome).  And I may be over quinoa, despite never having had it.  But salted caramel still rocks my socks. Continue reading
