The edible seasons are flying by. While there are some late bearing strawberries to be had, the season is pretty well over. Berries will be finished soon. CSA baskets are now brimming with zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant and peppers. But there are still stone fruits. Delicious, juicy, inspiring stone fruits. And to celebrate, I’m sharing two recipes plus a recipe idea that still needs tweaking. Continue reading
Garlicky Double Dill Pickles
Dill Love
We love dill pickles. Actually, we LOVE dill pickles. Little Miss could eat a jar in a week if I let her. I made a paltry 6 half pint jars last year. I don’t know what I was thinking. They were gone by the end of summer, but after cucumber season, of course. Continue reading
Double Chocolate Cherry Chip Cookies
A jubilee of cherries
Have I mentioned how much I love cherry season? Oh yeah, I did, here. It’s still going strong, and I’ve been indulging as much as I can. I bought a basket on the weekend from a farm nearer the lake, north of here. It still amazes me how the micro-climates around the peninsula can produce such variety in the same fruits (not to mention some incredible wines). These cherries are super dark, and very juicy, but smaller than the ones that we bought west of here. They are still delicious, though. Continue reading
Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream
Happy Anniversary
Wow, it’s been just over a year since My Edible Journey went live. In that time I’ve learned quite a bit, enjoyed some great food and taken a lot of pictures. I never planned om having a photo blog, expecting to pick up where my previous blog left off, but with a focus solely on food. With time though, I’ve realized that there really is no getting around needing images of the recipes I’m sharing. I’m still learning that part. Me and my awesome Nikon Coolpix P510 ( an advanced point and shoot, and Christmas present to myself) have worked hard to rise to the challenge. But we still have a nemesis or two. Including ice cream… Continue reading
Fresh Cherry Basil Salsa
It’s cherry season!
To understand how happy I am that cherry season is here, you need to know what happened last year in Niagara. Last spring, actually. We experienced weather in March that was beyond balmy. It was downright warm. So warm that we planted radishes and peas and harvested both before we normally would have planted them. So warm that the trees were tricked into budding early. Too early. An unfortunate hard frost came through and wiped out the local cherry crop, along with a lot of the other tree fruits. Cherries were hardest hit, though. We managed a meagre basket, found early one morning at the market, and that was the beginning, middle and end of cherry season for 2012. Continue reading
Honey Brushed Crusty Bread
Strawberries
We’ve been eating strawberries for weeks now. But we hadn’t really enjoyed them until this weekend. We bought a flat from a nearby farm stand and oh my word! They were the sweetest, juiciest berries of the year. Richly coloured throughout; none of the white centres that make strawberries a little tart. They were like candy.
Black Lentil Salad
Salad days are here
It’s officially summer. To celebrate, it’s become muggy and unsettled, with the threat of storms all week. Hubby and I rang in the solstice at a Pink Floyd (cover band) concert in an open air amphitheatre, under the (bright side of) the moon. Continue reading
Thai Inspired Salad
What’s in a name?
I’d love to call this just “Thai Salad.” That would flow better. But I can’t. I can’t because, while this recipe certainly borrows from some Thai flavours that I love, it’s not authentically Thai, and it bugs me to no end to see things labelled a certain way, and then include ingredients that make it more generic. Or even totally wrong. Chain restaurants are notorious for this. Your chicken burger is not Thai just because it has peanut sauce on it. Your salad is not Greek because you added Feta and black olives to a bowl of iceberg lettuce and mealy, out of season tomatoes. And that “Mexican pasta?” With the stringy chicken and Tex-Mex pre-shredded cheese blend doused in insipid salsa? Not even going there. /rant Continue reading
Rhubarb Cake
I baked a cake
I know it’s not necessarily a big deal to have baked a cake. Not normally, anyway. And especially when it’s not even a frosted masterpiece (or attempt). But I’ve been struggling with some sort of… something. We’ve narrowed it down to a viral sinus infection. And not only has it been uncomfortable, but the pressure has also messed with the vision in my left eye. So between the ache whenever I looked around, and not being able to see properly, baking (never mind blogging) hasn’t been on my radar. Continue reading
Old Fashioned Limeade
Feelin’ hot hot hot
Wow, has the heat arrived. And it’s unwelcome cousin, humidity. We had quite a storm the other night, complete with copious amounts of rain, so our gardens are happy. I actually harvested a few radishes already. That made my daughter happy. And we turned on the air conditioning last night. That made us all happy. Continue reading
