2013 – The Food That Was

The year that was - My Edible Journey

Well, that’s it then

My first January through December of blogging My Edible Journey.  There were some definite hits (wow, do you all love ham soup!)  And a few misses (so maybe I’m the only one who thinks that cabbage and kale pair well with honey and Feta).  And in between there have been seasons of incredible local bounty, delightful new tastes and a few surprises, good and… not as good.  There have been photos that I have quite loved, only to be panned by foodie link sites, and at least one I really didn’t like, but put up anyway and then had those same sites love them.  Go figure. Cranberry Clementine Parfaits

Cranberry Clementine Parfait | My Edible JourneyPart of what lessens the blow of Christmas being a mere week away is knowing that it’s also the season for wonderful treats, like fresh cranberries and clementines.  Did anyone else get a clementine in their stocking on Christmas morning?  We did.  Along with a single walnut.  Which never got eaten.  I suspect that we may each have gotten the same nut every year, to be honest. Brown Butter Applesauce with Walnuts

Brown Butter Applesauce with Walnuts | My Edible JourneyWhat season is it?

I know, I know, cranberries are the sauce fruit of the season.  Apples are so… autumn.  Well, it technically IS still autumn.  But it’s the best part of autumn.  The part where apples are still bountiful, but so are other treasures, like nuts.

So far this season we’ve had heartnuts, butternuts, black walnuts and chestnuts.  I also cracked open a tin of store bought salted mixed nuts, tossed them in a hot pan with maple syrup and cinnamon until they became caramelized, sweet goodness and took them to a girlfriend’s house to nibble while we watched White Christmas.  So good!  And pseudo-healthy. Let it Begin

The Christmas season has begun in earnest for us.  Up until this past Sunday (the first Sunday of Advent), I’ve felt a bit like I’ve been snitching cookies from the platter, sneaking in bits of Christmas where I can.  I always start getting into the spirit “early.”  By mid November, I’m normally chomping at the bit, listening to music, putting out the odd decoration…  Continue reading

Brown Butter Biscotti and a Festive Drink

Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Biscotti with Candy Cane Coffee |My Edible Journey

It’s gotten cold.  Winter began creeping in a week or so ago.  And with it, that dull light that is the bane of food bloggers.  Hence the photo quality.  Would it be weird to ask for pieces of white and black foam board for Christmas?

Then it snowed.  It was so unexpected that the kids didn’t even have boots.  We haven’t gotten snow like this in November in….  Well, I don’t remember.  Not in the past few years, anyway.  I’d already given up pining for it when it arrived.  And it brought with it a very festive spark. Continue reading

Chewy Nut Free Granola Bars

Chewy Nut Free Granola Bars |My Edible Journey

I’m not the sort of mom who has a variety of neatly cut up, ready to go fruits and veggies in tidily stacked and labelled containers in the fridge.  Ever.  I’m the mom who feeds my kids fruits and veggies at home, but who wants convenience when we’re getting ready to hit the road. Continue reading

Like a TV Clip Show

Sorry, folks. I’m down for the count this week with an ear infection/perforated eardrum.  So, in the spirit of television clip shows, I’ve compiled a few posts from the past year to hold us all over until I’m (hopefully) better next week.  And yes, lesson learned.  Keep a post or two in reserve for times such as this… Continue reading

Cabbage and Kale with Honey and Feta

Cabbage and Kale with Honey and Feta | My Edible Journey

Cabbage through the years

I never ate cooked cabbage when I was a kid.  Well, there was that one time when my mother presented us with a plate of knackwurst that had been cooked in sauerkraut.  That pretty much put me off of cooked cabbage and snappy-skinned German sausage until well into my adulthood.

My husband’s German background reintroduced me to cooked cabbage in the form of Rotkraut; a sort of sweet and sour red cabbage dish.  I didn’t like that, either.  Still don’t (though I’ve since had a knackwurst-style sausage, sans sauerkraut, that I did enjoy). Continue reading

Desire to learn

I didn’t grow up cooking.  While I have memories of my mother and her mother canning and cooking together, and my paternal grandmother’s kitchen being a constant source of culinary goodness, I have no memory of helping.  Or being taught any of the techniques or recipes I witnessed.

I want to say that things have changed for my kids.  That they’ve been my kitchen helpers daily since they could hold a wooden spoon.  But that’s not true.  At all.  Having never learned to cook at the side of a patient teacher, it’s been a struggle for me to find the patience to teach my own kids. Coleslaw with Miso Dressing

Coleslaw with Miso Dressing |My Edible Journey

I *think* it’s safe to say that the weather is turning cool.  It sure looks that way this week.  We’ve turned on the furnace.  That means something, right?  Though I do hope that it is still nice enough for a pleasant evening of Hallowe’en trick or treating.

It’s natural that when the weather turns cool, one’s culinary thoughts turn to things like warm breads, hearty stews and crunchy coleslaw.  Wait… what? Continue reading
